9 Keys to Walking In Christ

If you're in Christ, then you need to walk out your faith day-by-day. Similar to "hitting the gym" to exercise, you have to exercise your faith in order to walk and grow in Christ.

It's a choice to daily do the right things in pursuing God, His Word, and living out your faith through a Word and Spirit filled and led life!

So, how do you walk in Christ exactly? Good question!

God's Word outlines many things that we should and need to be doing to successfully walk in Christ and the following is a list of 9 of the Keys to Walking in Christ.

Each key includes scripture and practical insight for your further personal study.
This isn't a definitive list of the keys by any means but, it is a very practical list I'm sharing that will help you as you seek The Lord and His Holy Spirit to re-calibrate your walk in and with Him!
Key 1. Walk in New Life:
Read: Romans 6:4, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and Ephesians 4:22

To walk in Christ…you have to put off your old life and put on the new life!

You are a new creation with a new life that was given to you through Jesus Christ's free gift of salvation. Live as the new creation that you are!

Jesus will help you to do so every step of the way and He will work to transform you and renew your mind!

Key 2. Abide in His Word:
Read: John 8:31-32

Be a person of God’s Word. Be committed to His Word. Grow in the wisdom and knowledge of Him!

Let His Word permeate your life, heart, mind and soul as much as possible. Allow Him to transform and renew you through His Word! There is freedom through Christ and His Word is a key to your own discipleship.

You cannot grow without God's Word!

Key 3. Walk by Faith:
Read: 2 Corinthians 5:7

Life is crazy sometimes and you will experience very tough times. But, no matter what comes at you in this life…don’t walk out your faith by what you see, walk out your faith regardless of what you see!

Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and not the crashing waves that seem to be appearing around you!

Key 4. Walk in and Be Rooted in Him:
Read: Colossians 2:6-7

You have to work at walking in Christ and you need to seek to be rooted and established in Him!

As you grow in Christ, you should become more and more firmly rooted and planted like a tree that's roots grow deep but in this case, your roots grow deeper in Christ!

Key 5. Listen To God’s Voice and Follow Him:

Read: John 10:27-30

The world is vying for your attention and with it, many voices want you to listen to them and do, say, and be what they want! They also want to lead you where they want you to go and that's not always a good place!

You, on the other hand, need to listen to God's voice and follow Him only!!

Key 6. Walk in a Worthy Manner:
Read: Ephesians 4:1, Psalm 1:1-3, Micah 6:8, Romans 12:1-2, and 1 Peter 2:12

You have to own you walk and that includes your words and actions. You need to also be careful regarding who you choose to seek counsel from as well as those with whom you choose to associate with. This doesn't mean you need to isolate yourself but while you're in the world, you are not to be of it or emulate it.

Don't allow the influences of this world make you veer off course.

A worthy walk also includes humility and obedience…especially in a world that is often very full of itself and doesn't like to be told to do or follow rules and principles.

So, seek to be honorable in all you do and follow His principles, will, and instruction!
Key 7. Rely on The Holy Spirit for strength, wisdom, and direction:
Read: John 14:26

Toward the end of His earthly ministry, Jesus let us know that He'd send His Helper The Holy Spirit!

So, after He'd already sacrificed His life for you, He also lovingly sent Help once He departed so you would be strengthened, empowered, and receive wisdom and direction.

You need the help of The Holy Spirit in every aspect of life! So, never stop relying on His Help!
Key 8. Be committed to Prayer:
Read: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, 2 Chronicles 7:14

Prayer is such an awesome gift and tool God has given us!
It’s your opportunity to talk to God, to intercede for others, cry out to Him for help and much more!

Jesus said that His house will be a house of prayer, (See Matthew 21:13) and guess what...you're His house...the house that The Holy Spirit resides in.
So, be a walking house of prayer!

Key 9. Be committed to being an active part of the Body of Christ:
Read: Romans 12:5, Ephesians 4:25

We should not and cannot walk alone.  We are truly better together! God designed for us to be a part of the Body of Christ. With this, we need to relate too, support and work with one another with the goal to grow to become more complete in Christ!

Furthermore, you and I are the hands and feet of Jesus and He has given you a specific purpose and set of gifts, talents, and abilities that He wants you to serve Him and others with. Remember: you cannot grow alone nor can you discover your spiritual gifts by staying in isolation so, be an active part of the Body of Christ!

Questions to Get Started With:
-What does it mean to you to walk in Christ?
-What are the goals of Walking in Christ?
-What does walking in a worthy manner look like?
-Are there any of the 9 Keys listed here that you're not effectively doing?
-What do you need to do differently so you can more effectively walk in Christ?

Next Steps:
Let me challenge you to own your walk in Christ!

I want to also encourage you that in your walk, you NEVER WALK ALONE because Jesus reminds us that He is with us always! (See Matthew 28:20)

While there is support in The Body of Christ to help you walk in Christ, no one can walk your walk for you!  Simply put: Walk In Him! One step at a time with God's help and the help of The Body of Christ!

I pray that you walk in Him all the days of your life doing all of the things we just looked at and more!

In Christ Alone,
Your Brother and Servant,

Randolph Koch
